Austin MBA Experience: Advancement Through Education

Come to this free event to learn about the MBA application process, available scholarships , and hear from business and university representatives! The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) is the premier Hispanic business organization dedicated to building and advancing Hispanic leadership.

Speakers

Laura Langham

Laura Langham is an Associate Attorney at the law firm of Hilgers & Langham, P.C., practicing in the areas of wills, estate planning and probate, business formation and transactions, and real estate.  She is also an Adjunct Professor in the School of Management and Business at St. Edward’s University, teaching business law and business management classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Laura was born and raised in Austin, Texas.  She attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas, from which she received her B.A. in psychology and Spanish.  Laura received her J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio in 2006 and passed the Texas Bar Exam the same year.  After law school, she worked at the State Capitol as a Research Attorney for the Texas Senate Research Center for two legislative sessions, during which time she attended the evening MBA program at St. Edward’s University.  During her final semester at St. Ed’s, Laura accepted the offer to return the following year as an Adjunct Professor.  It was also during this time that Laura left the public sector and joined her father in private law practice.

Throughout most of her life, Laura has held a strong commitment to community involvement.  She has worked for the last five years with a group of women lawyers to organize an annual women’s resource fair providing free legal, medical, and social services to low-income women and children.  Laura has also worked closely with the Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation from its inception, as the initial interim executive director and as a consultant, which creates public campaigns focusing on children, education, racial justice, and criminal justice.

 

Xavier Cano,

L. Xavier Cano was born in Houston, TX. He graduated from the University of Houston (U of H), summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and a minor in music performance on flute. During his undergraduate years, Cano held internships with Continental Airlines, Frito-Lay, and Dell. He also received the U of H distinguished Scholar/Leader-of-the-Year award in the spring of 2004 for his commitment to leadership and academic excellence.

After graduation, Cano moved to Austin, TX to work in manufacturing operations for Dell. He won "World Quality Day” at his factory for a six sigma project and had the opportunity to display his project for Michael Dell, the company’s founder. After three years, he left Dell to work as a Strategy Management Consultant for Cipher Business Solutions, a boutique corporate performance management consulting firm.

In 2008, Cano was accepted into the MBA program at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Consortium Fellowship recipient and also received a National Society of Hispanic MBAs scholarship. After graduation, he moved to Charlotte, NC to work as a Quality and Change Delivery Consultant and Change Manager for Bank of America. He currently serves on the board of the NSHMBA - local Austin chapter.
