A Chapter’s Experience: The Power of Relationship Building By Sandra Palacios
After seeing how heartbroken everyone was after the nightclub shooting in Orlando, I felt like I needed to do something so I reached out to some of our Chapter’s corporate supporters. I contacted Chapter sponsors and some immediately joined our efforts. In collaboration with the Chapter we took lunch to the staff and volunteers of the Central Florida Second Harvest Food Bank. They’ve also been a long community partner of the Orlando Chapter and help collect and distribute food to local charities and youth. Together, we helped provide sponsor donated food to police and first responders at the nightclub’s site, and to friends and families of the victims.
These efforts spilled over and helped the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. They were also in desperate need of food and supplies for they were taking care of victims’ pets while they were in the hospital and in some cases, sadly finding them new homes.
As terrible and tragic as this experience was to our community, it was a ray of light to experience the received support from different sponsors. A testament to the power or community…
A special thanks to our sponsors UnitedHealth Group and Vistana Signature Experiences for their help during this time.

Hopeful Leadership as Mission-Critical By Ernesto Varela
It often seems one cannot go two days without some other crisis threatening our definition of effective leadership. Leaders in all fields are challenged to motivate others to make their organizations meaningful. This author would argue vehemently that leaders who appeal to fear ultimately degrade and diminish their organizations. One of Deming’s 14 Principles for organizations is, after all, “Drive out fear” for the sake of productivity.
A better alternative by far is leadership that builds and sustains hope. In this context, Hope Theory, as created by Professor C.R. Snyder and others at the University of Kansas 25 years ago, posits that hope is made up of both our pathway thinking (which develops a range of paths to reach our goals) and agency thinking (which is the belief that we can reach our goals). The most successful leaders cultivate both of these for themselves and their organizations and thereby drive results.
The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) is the premier Hispanic business organization dedicated to building and advancing Hispanic leadership through graduate management education and professional development.
