Congratulations to the 2012 Winners of the NSHMBA Brillante Awards of Excellence

Please join us in congratulating our 2012 winners of the Brillante Awards of Excellence.

Nominations were accepted in each category and the below were chosen by a panel of judges as this year’s deserving winners:

Brillante Award for Corporate Excellence

, headquartered in Armonk, N.Y., is one of the world‘s largest information technology services (IT) companies. It is the diversity and breadth of IBM´s portfolio — spanning hardware, software, services, research, financing and technology — that uniquely separates IBM from other companies in the IT industry. IBM has approximately 433,000 employees worldwide and conducts business in 170 countries.

Brillante Award for Educational Excellence

The Full-time MBA Program at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business centers on student success, and educates a diverse and accomplished student population to be principled leaders with a global mindset who are ready to serve business and society. Their new integrative core curriculum prepares students for internships, jobs and entrepreneurial endeavors. Students learn the analytical and persuasive skills needed to succeed in business, understanding when to use them and how to evaluate decisions ethically. Through their signature Global Business Experience, students gain hands-on experience and a global mindset that will last a lifetime.

Brillante Award for Member Service Excellence

Cosette Gutierrez
works in community relations at Target, managing charitable giving in several key markets across the U.S. with an emphasis on education and childhood literacy. Gutierrez was Chairman of the NSHMBA Board of Directors from 2008–2009, and has been a volunteer leader in the organization since 1998. Gutierrez has been named in Hispanic Business 100 Most Influential Hispanics, Hispanic Business 80 Elite Hispanic Women and Hispanic Top 100 Influential Latinas. She has also volunteered for United Way and the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management. Gutierrez has a bachelor of science in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master of business administration from Indiana University.

Brillante Award for Community Service Excellence

Su Casa Hispanic Center
serves the Latino and Hispanic immigrant community of Greater Cincinnati.Unable to feed or support their families, they undertake the dangerous journey to migrate to the U.S. seeking a better life for themselves and their families.Su Casa works with these families to help them access education, employment, health care and social services with the ultimate goal of assisting them in becoming fully integrated members of the greater Cincinnati community.

Su Casa was founded in 1997 as a ministry of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and was transferred to the leadership of Catholic Charities of SouthWestern Ohio in 2005.Catholic Charities is a faith-based agency serving people of all faiths and dedicated to carrying out the teachings of Catholic Social Doctrine, which is founded upon the principles of helping the vulnerable, supporting the poor and welcoming the stranger.The Program Director of Su Casa is Giovanna Alvarez.

Brillante Award for Volunteer Excellence

Julio Rocha
’s passion for entrepreneurship and volunteerism is evidenced by 12 years of experience as a financial advisor and community leader.

Founder of Rocha Financial Group, LLC, in Orlando, Fla., Rocha uses his business development, sales and investment know-how through leadership positions at several community organizations, including the Hispanic Business Council, Rotary International’s Lake Nona Club and the YMCA’s Teen Achievers.

Named a 2012 NSHMBA Rising Star for boosting membership and community partnerships, Rocha is president emeritus of the Orlando chapter and serves as advisor to NSHMBA CEO Manny Gonzalez.

A Celebration for a Cause -- The Brillante Awards Ceremony

The Brillante award recipients will be honored at the Brillante Awards Ceremony, held Saturday, October 6th at the 23rd Annual NSHMBA Conference and Career Expo. Tickets to the event , are just $50 each, with proceeds from each ticket sale going toward the NSHMBA Foundation, which acts as NSHMBA’s philanthropic partner in pursuit of our mission to increase the number of Hispanics graduating from master’s business degree programs.

Since 1989, the NSHMBA Foundation Scholarship Program has awarded $9.2 million to over 2600 Hispanic MBA students. Even with this success, Hispanics only represent 4% of prospective graduate students. With help from dedicated members and partners like you, we hope to increase this number!

Following the awards ceremony, you are also invited to join us for the Brillante Dessert Reception and After Party, held at the adjoining Rosen Centre Hotel, the official host hotel of the 23rd Annual NSHMBA Conference and Career Expo. This lively event will feature entertainment by Orquesta Infinidad and dancing and dessert!

Fall NSHMBA Magazine Available Soon!

The fall issue of the NSHMBA Magazine will be making its debut at the 23rdAnnual NSHMBA Conference and Career Expo, held next week in Orlando, Florida. For Premier and Executive members, you should also watch your mailbox for your personal printed copy of this publication.

The theme of this issue is "More than an MBA” and focus on the multiple facets of the NSHMBA members, and on the professional development that sets NSHMBA apart.

NSHMBA Austin Celebrates Milestone with 10th Anniversary of Texas LEAD

NSHMBA Austin celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Texas LEAD (Leadership, Education and Diversity) Conference on Friday, August 24th.Texas LEAD is the chapter’s signature one-day professional development event aimed to provide tools and resources for students, professionals and the community to achieve career success.

What started with a handful of dreamers has evolved to an outstanding development and networking opportunity to connect local professionals with great speakers, corporate executives and recruiters, academic partners, and community leaders. The event gathered over 250 attendees and it was held at the Commons Center, the University of Texas at Austin conference facility located on the university’s J.J. Pickle Research Campus.

Dell, Inc. was this year’s title sponsor.Other sponsors included State Farm Insurance, Farm Credit Bank of Texas, Charles Schwab & Co., Seton Family of Hospitals, Tesoro, Andrews Kurth, The Westin, University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business, St. Edward’s University, Baylor University, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, and Park University.

"Seize the Day, Lead the Way” was the overarching theme for the conference, enticing attendees to fully take advantage of opportunities in these times of change.

"For us, ‘Seize the Day, Lead the Way’ is more than a tagline. It is truly an invitation to take charge and not wait for permission, to make your mark and not be apologetic, to shine and not be timid, to transcend and lead with no hesitation. Leading is a personal choice and I congratulate each one of you for taking the time to develop and refine your skills by being here today!” said Artemio San Martin, NSHMBA Austin President, in his opening remarks.

Ed Loya, vice president of human resources at Dell, Inc., welcomed all participants and highlighted the company’s continuous support to Texas LEAD and the NSHMBA Austin chapter, and its commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Art Acevedo, chief of the Austin police department, and Jordan Friedman, the stress coach served as breakfast and luncheon keynote speakers.

This year’s program included a session on becoming politically and socially savvy with Joy Weaver, etiquette expert and author of the book "How to be Socially Savvy in All Situations”, and a mentoring master session featuring Joe Philipp, professional certified coach.

NSHMBA Austin advisor and entrepreneur, Eli Mercer, facilitated the panel "Managing Up Your Career”, in which five senior executives shared their personal journey and professional insights for career advancement.

Panel participants also included:

  • Ed Loya, vice president of human resources for corporate services, Dell, Inc.
  • Geronimo M. Rodriguez Jr., vice president of diversity and community outreach,Seton Healthcare Family
  • Gerry Tucker, vice president of human resources, Austin Community College
  • Hector Dominguez, vice president of technology services, Verdtek
  • Lydia Gonzalez Gromatzky, of counsel, Andrews Kurth.

"Women in Business” was the topic for a session led by Laura Huffman, state director, The Nature Conservancy of Texas, in which she discussed the increasing role of women in decision-making positions. "MBAs in the Non-Profit World” was the title of a second panel in which three experts discussed the alignment of the business skill set with community engagement efforts: Toya Haley, special counsel, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Matt Kouri, president and executive director, Greenlights for Non-Profit Success, and John-Michael Cortez, interim assistant director for community involvement, Capital Metropolitan Transport Authority. "Entrepreneurship” was a session led by Steve Blum, founder, Strategic Wealth Planning, in which he provided advice on how to start, sustain, and eventually sell a business.

Manny Gonzalez, NSHMBA CEO, gave remarks on NSHMBA’s mission and objectives, highlighting the upcoming 23rd Annual Conference & Career Expo, scheduled from October 4-6 in Orlando, Florida. NSHMBA will celebrate its 25thanniversary in 2013 holding its signature conference in San Antonio, TX.

The event concluded with a networking reception at The Westin Hotel at the Domain, Austin’s hot spot for fine living, shopping, and dining.

The NSHMBA University Partnership Program Awards $2.4 Million in Funding in 2012

The NSHMBA University Partnership Program was created to help universities increase the number of Hispanic earning master’s business degrees.Our University Partners provide financial assistance in form of scholarships, assistantships or fellowships, which enables these students to complete master’s degrees.

This program has been growing by leaps and bounds with a current total of 68 partner schools. With this growth, we are also proud to announce that in 2012, our University Partners awarded a total of 115 UPP scholarships, with total funding of $2.4 million!
