#The Reviews are in for the 23rd Annual NSHMBA Conference and Career Expo!

Students, professionals and exhibitors joined NSHMBA in Orlando Florida for our 23rd Annual Conference and Career Expo!  Of the nearly 4,500 attendees, 51% were Hispanic. Students represented the biggest number of attendees, with nearly 1500 attending to participate in the career expo and networking opportunities.

NSHMBA Foundation Scholar Elizabeth List spoke to the conference’s success, "The NSHMBA conference in Orlando was a smash hit!  People were lining up from everything from getting advice on interviews and elevator speeches to attending one of the many workshops.”

While the majority of students in attendance were enrolled in MBA programs (68%), this year’s conference witnessed the launch of the Ignite Program, which was designed to provide undergraduate students information about the value of an MBA.

One of the program participants took the time to let us know how this program affected her, "Thank you NSHMBA for igniting my ambition to pursue an MBA.  With all the great resources and network connections I now feel more prepared and determined to complete this goal. " said Claudia Cabral.

Our partner schools were a huge reason for the large number of attendees, with many of them sending several students to benefit from professional development and on-site job interviews.  Paul C. Allaire, Associate Director, MBA Career Management Center, Terry College of Business, The University of Georgia said, "This year we had almost 20% of our MBA class attend NSHMBA.  The students had 10 pre-scheduled interviews and landed 24 on-site interviews at the Expo, and one student has received an internship offer on site!”

In addition to the career expo and professional development opportunities, the conference events were well received and attended, including the Power of the Hispanic Market event, the Women’s Leadership Network Reception, the Target Scholarship Lunch, the Home Depot lunches and the Chrysler breakfast.

The Brillante Awards Dinner and Gala, held on Saturday, October 6th, was the culmination of the conference.  This year’s recipient of the Brillante Award for Community Service Excellence, the Su Casa Hispanic Center, enjoyed more than just the event in which they were honored. Giovanna Alvarez, Director, Su Casa Hispanic Center said, "I would like to commend NSHMBA for the excellent organization of the National Conference, in addition to all the professionalism displayed at each one of the individual events. Thank you very much for providing us the professional training that otherwise, it would be difficult to attend.”

Keep watching for exciting highlights from the 23rd Annual NSHMBA Conference and Career Expo.

We hope to see you at next year’s conference in San Antonio, Texas!

#How Would You Protect $15.1 Trillion?

As the central bank of the United States, the Federal Reserve System is charged with helping to ensure the safety and soundness of the nation’s banking and financial system.  It takes a diverse group of people to help protect the nations’ money. People like Roberto Coronado, Sean Rodriguez and Michael Silva.

Growing up as a child in the U.S.-Mexico border region, Roberto Coronado had the unique opportunity to experience first hand issues dealing with international economics. Those experiences sparked a love for economics that has parlayed into a successful career at the Federal Reserve System. Roberto’s career flourished after he joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as a student intern in 2001. He now serves as the assistant vice president in charge of the El Paso Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, where he is the Bank’s lead executive and regional economist for West Texas and Southern New Mexico.

Sean Rodriguez joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in 1983. As a young child, Sean was inspired to get into banking by a local community banker who helped advise his family’s business. Being a first generation college graduate was the start of Sean’s path to success.  Since starting his career, he has risen the ranks within the Federal Reserve System to become the highest ranking Hispanic executive at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Sean is the sales and marketing director for Federal Reserve Financial Services, and senior vice president for the Customer Relations and Support Office.

Who knew that a former Top Gun naval flight officer would eventually become a top-ranking executive at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York? After earning his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, and a J.D. from Columbia Law School, Michael Silva landed a job at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 1992 as a law clerk. Many of the principles that he learned early on have guided him to great levels of success at the New York Fed. His patience, flexibility, and most of all, integrity, have all been key during his tenure at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Michael is senior vice president of the Financial Institutions Supervision Group, where he leads the on-site team at Goldman Sachs.

The Federal Reserve System offers plenty of opportunities for candidates from every walk of life. Find out where you fit in at!
