Speaker Biography

 

Steven Alonso is the regional president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank’s Central Region, which includes operations in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. He is the former head of Fifth Third Bancorp’s Consumer Bank, comprised of Retail Banking, Consumer Lending, Residential Mortgage, Auto Lending, Bankcard, Collections and Credit Centers. 

Alonso is the first Latino regional president at Fifth Third Bank, has been a member of the Bank’s Enterprise Committee and the Senior Executive sponsor of Fifth Third’s Diversity Inclusion Councils.

Alonso has been a resident of Central Indiana for more than 20 years and joined Fifth Third in November 2008 as executive vice president, head of Mortgage and Consumer Lending. He also has been responsible for Business Banking for the Bancorp. 

Alonso previously served as founder, chairman and CEO of the Oak Street group of companies, which included Oak Street Mortgage (a retail and wholesale mortgage bank), Oak Street Funding (a commercial lender) as well as a debt-buying and collection company. Prior to that he served as president and CEO of Bank One’s (now JP Morgan Chase) Consumer Finance Group, which included Bank One Mortgage, student loans, home equity, consumer loans and tax-related lending. Alonso started his financial services career with Household Bank FSB and Household Finance after his employment with Procter & Gamble.


Alonso received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University. He received his master’s degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and has served as an adjunct professor at Xavier University for many years. 

Alonso currently is a board member of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and has been active in the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership (INHP), the Indianapolis Homeless Initiative.  He was a former member of the Indiana Hospital Council (appointed by former Gov. Mitch Daniels). He also serves on the board of the Greater Cincinnati Urban League. Alonso is a member of the World Presidents Organization, a member of the Retail Banking Executive Circle and a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association. He has been a finalist for the Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year.
