About the speaker(s):
Kirk D. Wessel, Ph.D.
Kirk grew up in New Jersey and completed his undergraduate work in general engineering from
the U.S. Naval Academy. After 12 years of active duty as a carrier-based Naval Aviator, he
transitioned to corporate America as an Area Human Resources Manager for Pepsi-Cola, first in
Los Angeles, then in Salt Lake City managing the Intermountain Area. In 1989, he became an
Owner/Partner of OCM, Inc., a Salt Lake City-based consulting firm focusing on organizational
development and executive transition/coaching. In 1995, Kirk joined the Associated Food Stores
executive management team as the V.P. of Human Resources. In 1996, he led the Associated
Food Stores reengineering program and subsequently was appointed V.P. of Operations.
Kirk earned his MBA and Ph.D. (Business Policy and Strategy) from the David Eccles School
of Business at the University of Utah. In 1999 Kirk joined the faculty of the Gore School of
Business at Westminster College. There he served as an Associate Professor of Management,
Management Department Chair and Academic Director of the MBA Program. In 2010 he
became the Dean of the Angell Snyder School of Business at Ottawa University. He has taught
MBA and undergraduate courses in strategic management, entrepreneurship, principles of
management, creative problem solving, leadership, and human resource management.
While pursuing his corporate and academic endeavors, Kirk continued his military career in
the Naval Reserve where he commanded a carrier-based helicopter squadron and served as the
Navy’s representative to the State of Utah. He retired as a Navy Captain in 2001.
Kirk has served on many non-profit and for-profit boards including the Boys and Girls Club of
Salt Lake City, YMCA of Greater Salt Lake (President), University of Utah Business Alumni
Association, Park City Community Church (Trustee), Cancer Wellness House (Chairman) and
Mountain America Credit Union (Supervisory Committee). He currently serves as a board
member for Industrial Supply, Inc of Salt Lake City. Kirk and his wife, Marilyn, live in Phoenix.
They have two children: Justin and Kimberly.
Joy C. Lubeck
Joy has worked with dozens of name brand organizations around the world, helping them to achieve their executive education and development goals. An expert in Corporate Partnerships and Alliances, her focus areas are in Leadership Development, Corporate Research and Consulting, Talent Acquisition, Executive Coaching, Governance, and Brand Development. Joy’s results and metrics-focused approach have made her the resource of choice in many high performing organizations.
Joy has served successfully at all organizational levels, including the Board level, of many prestigious organizations, in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. Joy has enjoyed a successful career as a Vice President of Executive Education at Thunderbird School of Global Management, where she worked with for-profit clients such as American Express, Grupo Alfa, Chase Card Services, Intel China and Cisco helping to design and deliver powerful executive development initiatives. In the non-profit sector, key clients served include the IFRC, World Wildlife Fund, UNICEF, ProMujer, and ASHOKA, among many others. Previously, she was Vice President of Thunderbird’s Alumni Relations where she successfully globalized the Thunderbird Alumni Network, comprised of over 40,000 highly mobile individuals within 140 countries working in 15,000 corporations worldwide. Joy is currently a volunteer leader in Thunderbird Project Artemis: the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Program, the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations, and the Phoenix Chapter of 85 Broads. She has positively impacted hundreds of organizations and thousands of leaders as she has consultatively engaged and collaborated with corporations who are in the process of actively developing their human capital. Joy is sought after for her expertise as a strategy consultant and relationship management professional in the area of global strategic leadership development, for both for-profit and non-profit organizations. She has been a very successful VP Non profit professional with P&L responsibilities in the millions, with substantial experience in volunteer leadership engagement, board governance, recruitment and stewardship, fund raising, marketing.
