IN THE HEIGHTS Three Kings NSHMBA Night
Monday, January 25, 2010

NSHMBA’s CT Chapter proudly hosted a Three Kings NSHMBA Night celebration at The Busnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford, Connecticut where over 75 NSHMBA members, friends and supporters enjoyed the performance of the Broadway production and 2008 Tony Award Winner of Best Musical In the Heights. The event was sponsored by State Farm, United Healthcare Group and Travelers.

The pre-show reception in the Seaverns Room was packed with over 55 participants, and four of the key cast members joined us in a meet and greet session. Our corporate sponsors were acknowledged and the evening lent itself to a myriad of networking opportunities for all of the groups – our customers – present.

The National Marketing Director of the production’s tour management company donated 20 tickets to our students from Aspira, INROADS, and the Chapter’s Quest Summit. In addition to the students, participants included a diverse mix of supporters and friends that included Corporate sponsors and guests (13), Employee Resource Group representatives & guests (17) from four of our affiliate groups, NSHMBA chapter officers and guests (10), and friends of NSHMBA (15) who purchased tickets through NSHMBA’s marketing efforts for that evening.

The Friday (January 8) immediately following our event, the Chapter sponsored a second event at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy where over 250 10th, 11th and 12th graders were visited by cast members of the production and were treated to an impromptu a cappella performance of two songs – much to the surprise and enthusiastic applause of the students.

This historic two-day event was a testament to true partnership. Sometimes quantifying sponsorship opportunities is difficult, but it always tells the story. Because of the NSHMBA Three Kings Night event with IN THE HEIGHTS, our chapter was able to:

  • Host a lovely pre-show reception - a meet and greet event for 55+ guests with four of the ITH cast members at The Seaverns Room - creating a wonderful networking environment for all the groups with whom we work;

  • Market the historic event to many of our members and approximately 75 individuals associated with NSHMBA saw the play that night; this is not counting emails received stating their intent to attend on a different night;

  • Negotiate 20 vouchers free of charge from the tour management company to invite 20 of our students and give them access to precisely what our mission states;

  • Gain a new corporate sponsor: United Healthcare Group;

  • Develop a new relationship with another potential corporate sponsor;

  • Recruit an MBA participant as a potential new board member;

  • Strengthen our chapter relationship with an area High School;

  • Plan an appearance on El Show de Analeh, a Spanish-language television talk show for Univision in Connecticut.

It goes to show that it is events such as these that expose our young people in a manner consistent with our mission to improve society.
