Welcome to Boston!

Become part of something great!—Karina Arnaez, Chapter President

Dear Members, Sponsors, Partners and Friends,

The way our Boston Chapter of NSHMBA looks to accomplish our mission and vision is to create programs within our calendar that help move the marker. Other organizations in Boston do a great job of networking.  We then create programs (not just events!) that will fulfill our mission, be relevant to different member constituents and be manageable by our volunteer leaders.

…”The evidence is in the programs they have created for their calendar.”

Friday, March 12, 2010
There is a TAG Panas event this Sunday and volunteers are needed. The agenda for that day goes as follows:

1pm-2pm: Finish set ups
2pm-2:40pm:  Food and Intro
2:45pm-3:15pm:  Competition
3:15pm-3:45pm:   Competition

3:45pm-4:15pm:  Competition
4:15pm-4:45pm:  Competition
4:45pm-5pm:  Results/Closing
5pm-5:45pm:  Clean up

The object of the mingler is to enforce teamwork and how to compete in a positive manner. The goal is to collect as many PANAS Points throughout the tournament. The pair/team that has the most points at the end of the tournament wins the grand prize!

The 4 competitions each require a facilitator/ host. The host is responsible in explaining the rules and facilitating the competition. I cannot be at all 4 competitions at the same time, so therefore your help will be vital. All competitions are 29/30 minutes. Once a team completes a competition, they quickly move onto the other competition. The 4 competitions are:

PANAS Jeopardy (Jeopardy-style game); Need a hostThe NewlyPAIRED Game (Newlywed game-style); hosted by Lynette
Name That PANAS Tune (guess the song game); Need a host
Amazing Scavenger Race (college campus-wide Amazing Race-style game); hosted by JoélLynette, you would be hosting the NewlyPAIRED Game. I have the questions prepared and the materials will be ready for you. I will discuss how the your competition will work before 2pm. Could you meet me at UMass Boston at 1pm?

Evelyn, I just need 2 more hosts if you know of anyone. There roles as hosts will be:
Name That Tune host: play 20 songs for a certain time and letting the teams guess either the name of the song, artist, or both.
Scavenger Hunt host: Explains the hunt, rules, and checks off the clues. If you know of anyone, please have them contact me before Friday so I can speak to them about their roles. They must call me on my cell (617-407-9594) . Let me know. Thanks for your help.

NU looking for MBA mentors!
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
We have an exciting opportunity for you to assist an MBA student.  Please consider mentoring one of our MBA students.  The Class of 2011 is in the second semester of their first year classes and will be working on corporate residency June – December.  They will graduate in August 2011.  We have found that matching them with a mentor at the end of their first year of classes can make a significant difference for the student as they explore their career interests and plans.

We ask our mentors for a commitment of just an hour per month.  Meetings do not have to be in person and should be scheduled at your convenience whether in person or by phone.  You can significantly assist students by sharing your experience and insights, by listening to their plans and offering feedback, facilitating networking connections, attending professional association meetings together and maybe even having them shadow your for a day at work.  Students can learn from your experience and insights.

In addition to background material provided in advance, the Career Center will support you with a monthly update on what is going on with the students to help support your conversations.  We’ll also kick off the program with a mentor reception to provide an easy opportunity to you to make initial contact with your students.

Please consider making a difference in the life of one of our MBA students.  If you are interested in joining us, please return the attached application to me by March 12.  This will assist in the matching process.  If you have colleagues interested in mentoring a student, please let me know as we would love to have them join our efforts as well.  Thanks for your consideration.

Thanks.
Lynne
